Arkansas Men, NC State & Rutgers
Women Take 2004 Paradise Jam Championships
The Arkansas men’s basketball team traveled
to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in November on a mission to re-establish
their program. They accomplished that quite decisively by earning
three consecutive wins in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam
by an average margin of 25 points. In the championship game, Eastern
Michigan pulled to within eleven points with 9:33 remaining, but
the Razorbacks turned up the heat to win by 18 (82-64). Arkansas
sophomore guard sensation, Ronnie Brewer, displayed a multitude
of skills to earn the Paradise Jam men’s MVP honors. Interestingly,
twelve of the twenty statistical team records that have been kept
since 2001 fell in 2004. Four of the six men’s participating
teams earned their way into the record books, despite the dominance
of the Arkansas team.
In the women’s St.
John division, Rutgers also displayed tournament dominance, winning
three straight games
by an average margin of
19 points. Kentucky, Oregon State, and South Dakota State took turns
beating one another, each finishing with 1-2 records. Rutgers placed
three players on the all-tournament team, with 6-2 junior forward
Michelle Campbell earning MVP honors.
NC State narrowly beat
Louisville, 54-49, in the St. Thomas division championship game.
Louisville
trailed by three with :43 seconds
remaining in the contest. NC State’s Marquetta Dickens calmly
sank two free throws with :09 left to seal the victory. Tiffany
Stansbury, the 6-3 junior forward from NC State, earned tournament
MVP honors.
Fox College Sports televised
both of the women’s
final games, as well as the championship and consolation games of
the men’s
tournament. Several Fox Sports regional markets picked up the broadcasts
as well, including Chicago, MSG (New York), Southeast and Detroit.

NABC Partners with
BTI on Schedule Board
The
National Association
of Basketball Coaches
(NABC) partnered in
April with Basketball
Travelers, Inc. to
provide NCAA Division
I college coaches
access to a web-based
scheduling bulletin
board. After completely
revamping their website,
the NABC has included
a link to BTI’s
scheduling bulletin
board, which assists
coaches in booking
non-conference games
and tournaments. Look
for other joint ventures
in the future between
Basketball Travelers,
Inc. and the NABC.

Summer/Winter Foreign
Tours are Here to
Stay
Teams
can still participate
in summer or winter
foreign tours, thanks
to the April NCAA
Management Council
defeat of Prop. 2003-67
(to eliminate ALL
foreign tours). Tour
adventures are still
available to book
for this summer and
beyond.
Although
Prop 2003-67-1 passed
(to eliminate Fall
Break Tours), the
legislation does not
take effect until
November 1, 2004.
This enables schools
with 2004 Fall Breaks
(such as Columbus
Day) to take a foreign
tour before November
1, 2004. The best
part is, your freshmen
can participate on
the tour! Note that
the new legislation
DOES NOT AFFECT Labor
Day tours, and if
your school has started
classes prior to Labor
Day, your freshmen
are also eligible
to travel with you
on your tour.
